Salesforce vs SugarCRM – Comparing the Database Structure

Written By: Cliff Ford on July 22, 2012 No Comment

Sugar and Salesforce are fundamentally different

The philosophical difference between Sugar and SFDC is vast. Salesforce is designed around a multi-tenant environment. This made sense many years ago, but it no longer makes sense in the new world of virtual servers. Now everyone can have their own database on their virtual machine – exactly the database structure of other systems such as SugarCRM and Microsoft CRM.

Sugar Provides a Personal Database for Every Customer (Single-Tenant)

Apparently, what sets SugarCRM apart from its competition in conducting a CRM Comparison is the fact that its underlying database structure makes it totally different by allowing customers to have their own database system. Other CRM solutions such as Salesforce.com are built on a multi-tenant SaaS data model which allows for several users to share only a single underlying database. This type of structure was designed 10 years ago, when legacy database technology entails huge expenses when being scaled horizontally. Recent databases such as MySQL are configured for cloud computing and does not cost that much when running a huge and horizontally-scaled architecture such as SugarCRM. This accounts for a lot of credit because customers would always demand the privilege of privacy especially when conducting their business affairs.

Salesforce provides a Multi-Tenant Structure

When you Compare CRM models, it is important to take note of just how flexible the system is to your business. The multi-tenancy models of non-Sugar CRM solutions prevent users from making more than minor code-level changes to align their systems to suit their individual needs. The fact that a user cannot customize is the first major flaw of this model. The second flaw is the setting that a customer doesn’t have access to his own data, which is a complete turnoff to most businesses who value back office integrations and local access by reporting and analytics tools.

Multi-Tenant environments place Businesses in Jeopardy

The risk factor in Multi-tenant databases that share data from multiple customers is the reality that vital business information is not far from being exposed. This includes trade secrets or possible mergers. CRM software like that of Salesforce.com tends to restrict customers from managing their own data. On the other hand, SugarCRM eliminates this risk by establishing private and individual databases for every customer.

“Our switch from Salesforce.com to SugarCRM means that we are now even better equipped to deliver excellence in customer service.”- Alex Pettefer, UK Group Marketing Director, Loomis UK
